METAL AND MACHINERY

SMELTING

We had to get hold of metal before we could start using it. The first was gold, which – together with occasional amounts of copper – could be gathered in its ‘natural’ state. The other first metals (tin, lead, silver, iron and mercury) were obtained by applying heat to their ore. This smelting process is thought to have begun with tin and lead (c. 6500 BC, Turkey). Then came copper and iron (see here), leading to the production of steel (c. 1800 BC, Anatolia/Turkey).
